In 2001, when 59, Sinkford was elected President of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
As a teenager, he was an active member in Cincinnati of that Ohio city's First Unitarian Church, serving as the president of Liberal Religious Youth. At Harvard University, he graduated cum laude in 1968.

Asked by a New York journalist if he is a Unitarian theist, humanist, agnostic, atheist, Christian, or is Earth-centered, Sinkford responded that he is a Unitarian Universalist, more interested in activism than in labeling. He said he has had "all of the above" in his congregations.
Sinkford in 2009 completed his service as President of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
