Algie, William (19th Century)
In Canada, Algie was an industrialist who established the Beaver Knitting Mill in 1881.
He was president from 1885 to 1889 of the Canadian Secular Union. In 1884, small societies were reported in Welland, St. Thomas, and Aylmer, Gananoque, Belleville, and Ottawa.
The Toronto Freethought Society changed its name to Secular in the 1880s, and in Ottawa the Pioneer Freethought Club was formed in 1880.
