Barthez, Paul (1734—1806)

Barthez, a French physician and friend of D’Alembert, was once shown by the Archbishop of Sens a number of works relating to the rites of his see. Barthez reportedly and wittily observed, “These are the Sens ceremonies, but can you show me the sens [sense] of ceremonies?”
