Online Journal was launched by Bev Conover in 1998 with the announcement:

There were just a relative handful of online alternatives to the corporate media when I launched Online Journal on September 5, 1998, and was amazed at the reception it received from readers hungry for news and commentary the so-called “mainstream media” were failing - and are still failing - to give them.

An example of the journal's contents is a report of Conover's visit to Cairo and Alexandria in 2007.

The publication welcomes submissions, and contains views about religion, Social Security, and a variety of subjects.
