Allen, Norm R. Jr. (1957- )

Allen edited The Black Humanist Experience: An Alternative to Religion (2003) and is Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism's African Americans for Humanism.

The deputy editor, letters editor, and book review editor for Free Inquiry, Allen speaks on behalf of the secular humanist movement not only in the United States but also abroad. He has traveled to Africa several times, helping establish more than 50 humanist groups throughout the African continent.

He is the editor of the AAH Examiner, the quarterly international newsletter of African Americans for Humanism. His writings have appeared in books such as Fred Whitehead's Culture Wars (1994), Anthony Pinn's By These Hands: A Documentary History of African American Humanism (2001), the National Center for Science Education's Voices for Evolution (1995), Pinn's Varieties of African American Religious Experience (1998), Barry F. Seidman's Toward a New Political Humanism (2004), and Marie Natoli's Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Public Policy, Justice, and the Law (2006).

Allen signed Humanist_Manifesto_2000 and has contributed major biographical pieces and a ground-breaking survey article on African Americans and Unbelief to the New Encyclopedia of Unbelief (2006).
