Nicla Vassallo (6 November 1963 - )

Vassallo was born in Porto Maurizio-Imperia, Italy, the daughter of Luigi Vassallo, a clerk, and Renata Vercesi, a schoolteacher.

Vassallo studied philosophy at the University of Genova and at King's College, University of London.

After receiving her Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science, she was appointed Research Fellow and then Researcher. In 2002 she qualified as Associate Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Catania, and then in 2004 as Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Bergamo. From 2003 to 2008 she was Visiting Professor at the University Vita–Salute San Raffaele, Milan, where she lectures on Epistemology in the Psychology Faculty. Since 2005 she has been a Full Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Genova. She taught Philosophical Propaedeutics, Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology. She now teaches Theoretical Philosophy and is part of the teaching staff of the Doctorate in Philosophy.

In recent years Nicla Vassallo has been responsible for seven research projects for the National Research Council. She has been a Board member of SIFA, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Iride: Filosofia e discussione pubblica and the on-line dictionary Foldop, a member of the Board of Referees of CIVR (Committee for Research Evaluation) for VTR (the first Italian Research Evaluation Exercise), and amember of the Scientific Committee of 2–R – The Journal of Philosophical Reviews, and Readings – The Swif’s series of E-books.

She currently is Book Review Editor for the journal Epistemologia: Rivista Italiana di Filosofia della Scienza, and an Affiliated Member of Associazione Festival della scienza, Centro Studi Urbani, and CRESA (Center of Research in Experimental and Applied Epistemology). She is a Member of the Advisory Board of the European Journal of Analytic Philosophy,the Institute for Scientific Methodology, and the journal Iride: Filosofia e discussione pubblica. She is a Member of the Boards of Directors of Fondazione per la Cultura, and a Member of the Editorial Board of Gender, Iris: European Journal of Philosophy and Public Debate, the L&PS: Logic and Philosophy of Science - An Electronic Journal, the on–line journal Nordicum-Mediterraneum, and the on–line journal Rescogitans. Finally, she is a Member of the Scientific Committee of Evocamondi, Il Festival della Scienza, Il Festival per l'Economia Interculturale, O.N.DA (Osservatorio Nazionale sulla Salute della Donna), OspedaleDonna, Rivista d'Estetica, and the on–line journal Scienza & Filosofia.

Vassallo has written more than sixty articles in Italian and in English that have appeared in philosophical journals, edited books, conference proceedings, and encyclopedias, and has published six books, edited three others, and co–edited six more. Her latest sole–authored work is "Teoria della conoscenza" ("Theory of Knowledge", Laterza, Roma-Bari 2003; second edition 2008) and her latest co–authored work is "Filosofia delle donne" ("Philosophy of Women", Laterza, Roma-Bari 2007; second edition 2007). Her most recent edited book is "Donna m'apparve" ("Woman appears to me, Codice Edizioni, Torino 2009), and her most recent co–edited book is "Knowledge, Language, and Interpretation: On the Philosophy of Donald Davidson" (Ontos Verlag, Frankfurt, 2008).

Nicla Vassallo has given talks in many of the most important Italian Universities (Bergamo, Bologna, Cagliari, Firenze, Genova, Messina, Milano Cattolica, Milano San Raffaele, Milano Statale, Padova, Pisa, Reggio Emilia, Roma La Sapienza, Roma Tre, Salerno, Sassari, Torino, Trieste, Trento, Urbino, Venezia) and abroad in France, Denmark, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey.

She works mainly in the area of Analytic Philosophy. Her primary research and teaching areas are Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology. She also has serious research interests in Feminist Philosophies, Gender Studies, History and Philosophy of Logic, Metaphysics, Philosophical Naturalism and Scepticism. She contributes to various blogs, magazines, newspapers, and regularly writes for the Sunday Cultural Supplement of the newspaper Sole–24 Ore.

Presently, Prof. Vassallo lives in Genova, Italy.
