Shipley, Maynard (1872–1934)
Shipley, husband of writer Miriam Allen deFord, was a signer of Humanist Manifesto I.
A lecturer on astronomy and evolution, he wrote thirty-three “Little Blue Books” and was founder and president of the Science League of America.
Shipley, a popular public and radio lecturer wrote The Key to Evolution (1927), The War on Modern Science (1929), and numerous Little Blue Books.
In 1914 and 1915, he edited The Washington Socialist and was an unsuccessful candidate in 1920 for a public office.
Shipley, an atheist, died thirteen months after signing Humanist Manifesto I and, following her husband’s request for cremation, de Ford then spread his ashes in the San Francisco Bay he had so deeply loved, an unusual act and one which disturbed some Californians at that time.
