John Henderson (20th Century)

Hendeerson earned his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1945 and served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon for one year, retiring at the rank of colonel.

After leaving the USAF, he practiced as a general surgeon in Asheville, North Carolina. He also served as the medical director for Planned Parenthood and as the medical examiner for Buncombe County.

  • a well-known freethinker who wrote three books, including Judging God and Fear Faith Fact Fantasy, he spoke to atheist and humanist groups around the United States.

Henderson died August 1, 2008, at the age of 85 and is survived by his wife, fellow American Humanist Association member Ruth Henderson and his three children.

Henderson is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia with a humanist symbol on his tombstone.
