Clarke, James Freeman (4 April 1810 - 8 June 1888)

Clarke, a Unitarian and a theologian, edited the Western Messenger (1833—1840) and taught at Harvard Divinity School. He was a member of the Transcendental Club, along with Bronson Alcott and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Clarke was active in the anti-slavery, woman-suffrage, and other reform movements. He wrote Ten Great Religions (1872—1883) and Non-Essentials in Religion (1878).
