Giorgio Baruchello
From Philosopedia
Giorgio Baruchello (3 August 1974 - )
Baruchello is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at the University of Akureyri in Iceland.
He was born in Genoa, Italy, the son of Sergio Baruchello, a bank manager, and Francesca Agostina Dolente, a clerk at the City Mayor’s office and daughter of the self-taught historian, painter and inventor Severino Domenico Dolente.
In 1998, Baruchello completed his Laureate in philosophy at the University of Genoa, writing his dissertation on Richard Rorty’s neo-pragmatism. In 1995 and 1998 he attended courses at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. Between 1999 and 2002 he read philosophy at the University of Guelph, where he wrote a Ph. D. thesis on the understanding of cruelty in Western thought from the Middle Ages to the end of the twentieth century.
In 2003 the University of Guelph awarded him the D. F. Forster Medal, the highest convocation award for graduate students. Named for the late Donald Forster, a former president of the University of Guelph, the medal recognises academic achievement, motivation, leadership, and citizenship.
Baruchello is married to Rachael Lorna Johnstone, a Scottish legal scholar, and they have a son, Kieran Logi Baruchello.
He works in the fields of ethics, social and political philosophy, axiology, the history of philosophy and ideas, and the philosophy of science, particularly of the social sciences.
Baruchello's most recent publications include essays on cruelty, death, Arthur Schopenhauer, and the origins of modern science. He has recently contributed two essays to UNESCO’s Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems, one of which is a comprehensive survey of the history of Western philosophy from a life-grounded perspective.
Given his overall emphasis on human life-needs and healthy self-development, physical as well as spiritual and mental, Baruchello could be described as a personalist, although the most noticeable influence on his outlook derives from the "life-value turn" of Canada’s John McMurtry, a social philosopher and ethicist.
"Personalism is usually theistic but does not need to be so," he has written, citing an online overview by Kevin Schmiesing.
In addition to having taught at the universities of Genoa and Rennes within the context of the Socrates-Erasmus programme, he has been a visiting fellow at the International Study Centre of Queen’s University at Herstmonceux Castle in England and has delivered scholarly papers at several other universities, including Laval University in Canada and China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing.
Together with Maurizio Tani of the University of Iceland he is the founder and editor of the first Icelandic e-journal in Nordic and Mediterranean Studies, Nordicum-Mediterraneum.
