Amicis, Edmonde de (1846—1908)

Amicis was a leading Italian who served in the army against the Pope’s troops and then became, said the Athenaeum, “one of the most extensively read Italian authors of the last three-quarters of a Century.”

Amicis professed agnosticism in his Memorie and reported that he was “fascinated and tormented by the vast mystery of life.”
