Thayer, Dorothea (20th Century)

Thayer was secretary-treasurer of the New York City American Humanist Association chapter when Warren Allen Smith founded the group and led it until 1953. She then continued when Ingersoll’s granddaughter, Eva Ingersoll Wakefield, succeeded to the post.

Thayer never missed a meeting, joyfully greeted such speakers as Erich Fromm and George Axtelle, and helped considerably to give the group a feeling of togetherness and purpose.

A person with little money to spare, she contributed heavily to humanist causes both in time and resources. For the record, following is some of the correspondence between her and Smith:
