Johanson, Donald Carl (28 June 1943 - )

A physical anthropologist, Johanson since 1981 has been president of the Institute of Human Origins in Berkeley, California. He taught anthropology at Stanford University (1983—1989), at Case Western Reserve University (1978—1981), and Kent State University (1978—1981).

With M. A. Edey, he wrote Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind (1982); with James Shreeve, Lucy’s Child: Discovering a Human Ancestor (1989); and with Kevin O’Farrell, Journey from the Dawn (1990). In 1996 he wrote From Lucy to Language.

Johanson was producer of the films The First Family (1981) and Lucy in Disguise (1982).

In 1983 Johanson was named a Humanist Laureate in the Council for Secular Humanism’s International Academy of Humanism.
