Schwartz, Delmore (8 December 1913 - 11 July 1966)

Schwartz was a poet, editor, and author of In Dreams Begin Responsibilities (1938).

Asked in 1951 for his views on humanism, he responded, “I’m sorry to have to say that my own views, such as they are, can’t be formulated in terms of the seven kinds of humanism you mention.”

In 1959 he received the Bollingen Prize, the youngest such recipient.

In 1962 he began teaching creative writing at Syracuse University. His alcoholism and later insanity was the subject of Saul bellow's Humboldt's Gift (1975).

Schwartz was interred at Cedar Park Cemetery, in Emerson, New Jersey
