D. D. Bandiste (1923 - )

Prof. D.D. Bandiste is a distinguished Professor of Philosophy and a Vice President of the Rationalist Association of India.

A former Hindu nationalist and a Rural Reconstruction Society (RRS) activist, he was detained for five years following the assassination of Mohandas Gandhi. In 1953 he joined the Banares Hindu University and studied the philosophies of all religions, then became an atheist and ultimately an activist. He has spent over fifty years propagating Rationalism.

Bandiste is the author of several important works including New Humanism and Humanist Thought in Contemporary India; The Ethics of Bertrand Russell; Manavendra Nath Roy; Subodh Samkhya Darshan; Humanist Values: A Source Book, A Manual of Philosophy of Science, etc.

In 1981, he retired as professor of Philosophy, Government, Arts, and Commerce College, Indore.

In 2000, Bandiste was honoured by the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, which conferred upon him The Reformist Agarkar Award for his numerous and incessant contributions towards the rationalist - humanist activities. He received the award from Dr. Shriram Logoo, a fellow atheist and activist.
