Alexander, Charles and Ezra Alexander (18th Century)

Charles and Ezra Alexander, both of whom signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, were freethinkers.

That declaration allegedly was proclaimed in Charlotte, North Carolina, by the citizens of Mecklenburg on 20 May 1775, a full year before the national Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776. The tale has not been supported by documentary evidence.
