From Philosopedia
Beit, Alfred (15 February 1853—16 July 1906)
Beit was the son of a German Jew who practiced the Lutheran religion, but his sons rejected both creeds. A close associate of Cecil Rhodes, Beit made a large fortune and left £2,000,000 for charitable and educational purposes and the development of South Africa. His brother, Sir Otto Beit (1865—1930), also a freethinker, carried out the benevolent plans and was also a Trustee of the Rhodes Trust. Single, Beit never married.
