Kwasniewska, Aleksander [President] (15 November 1954 - )

A Polish politician, Kwasniewska was a leader of the Polish youth movement including being chairman of the Polish Socialist Students’ Union at Gdansk. He then became chairman of the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland and leader of the Democratic Left Alliance Caucus.

In 1995 he defeated Lech Walsea to become President of Poland.

Kwasniewska, an atheist, and his Catholic wife, Jolanta Kwasniewska, welcomed Pope John Paul on his 1999 visit to his native country.
