Abel-Smith, Brian (1926—1996)

Abel-Smith, an educator and professor of social administration at the University of London, wrote with R. Titmuss The Cost of the National Health Service in England and Wales (1956); A History of the Nursing Profession (1960); British Doctors at Home and Abroad (1964); and Legal Problems and the Citizen (1973), among other works. In a Guardian tribute to Abel-Smith, Professor Julian Le Grand, of the London School of Economics, quoted Thomas Paine’s “my country is the world and my religion is to do good.” Paine could have been writing about Abel-Smith, Prof. Le Grand stated.
